Susanna Burton’s 16 Illustrated Tongue Twisters exhibition

Susanna Burton 16 Tongue Twisters

Beaucatcher is delighted to welcome back Susanna Burton to the salon with her 16 Illustrated tongue twisters exhibition, which is gracing the walls already.

She says

These images were made as the final project of my Illustration MA with Falmouth University. They are based on a list of speech training sentences written in the 1960s by my mum who was a drama teacher.

I wanted to make 16 illustrations, that would work individually and as a group. I wanted the work to be original, layered, and fun, for images and text to share rather than repeat the story.

I approached the images individually asking, ‘What does this idea need?’ Illustrating the sentence ‘Put a little salt butter in it’ or ‘It is not what I thought it was’ was a challenge, and making those illustrations interesting and entertaining was my first priority, then I looked at how to get the illustrations to work as a group. I did this by setting a limited colour palette across the images and making all 16 the same size and proportion. My visual language for the project was quite mixed, I studied illustrators and artists who work in collage to see how their work coheres visually despite being made of disparate styles. The images were made using a mixture of analogue and digital techniques.

The final 16 images can be unpicked for meaning, each taking a little time, the visual equivalent of a tongue twister. In my research I looked at adding sound to the images, different voices speaking the sentences. I saw how this altered and added to the audience’s perception of the images. The sentences were written to be read aloud and making images that encouraged participation, with the audience speaking the sentences out for themselves, was interesting to explore.

I hope you enjoy my illustrated tongue twisters,
Susanna
