Our new exhibition of paintings by Ines Szamrey from Argentina, who has been living and working in the UK since 2005. She describes her paintings this way:
Each painting begins with a series of arbitrary strokes which soon develop into a formal idea to explore. Spontaneity is the goal at this stage. I continue to overlap different media: chalk, crayon, painted paper, over thin and thick acrylic paint. Each layer represents a shift in direction, a new challenge or choice, a new painting to become. I delight in working with the accidental and deliberate evolution of the painting. The finished painting is open ended, and because of the nature of the technique it is difficult to end a composition which is ultimately a sum of several paintings that lay behind the final coat.
