Gina Southgate is a live painter, best known for delivering spontaneous, intuitive, site specific artworks that capture the frisson of live musical performance. Her reputation has grown on the international jazz scene where she’s painted and performed for three decades. She carries this unique energy and vibrancy into her abstract and landscape work.
She returns to Beaucatcher with an all-new body of original work created the past year where she has painted at numerous festivals at the cutting edge of the jazz scene.
Her landscapes are made on location and like her gig paintings remain as a document of that moment.
The two large abstracts in the show were started in live performance situations and developed over long periods of time back in the studio. Southgate works with layering, monoprinting and texture allowing spontaneity and urgency to sit comfortably with stasis.
The exhibition comprises a selection of original landscapes, abstracts and live gig paintings accompanied by fine art quality giclee prints, and more, priced from £80 to £800. A changing and fluid exhibition to fit the season. Every sale will include a donation to Beaucatcher’s chosen charity, Solace Womens Aid.
Gina says:
I have lived and worked in Stoke Newington for 25 years. It is a fantastic community that has nurtured my development as an artist. Beaucatcher has been a big part of my growth. Maryna and her team support artists in many ways but mainly by giving over her space to exhibitions, gigs and the like and never charges or takes commission on sales. It is a pleasure to be exhibiting here again and the title reflects both the work on show and the feeling I get when I’m in the salon.
